Travelling to Bath

Located in the South West of England, Bath is easy to reach, just 90 minutes from London Paddington station by train and a short drive from both the M4 and M5 motorways. Bath is also just 19 miles from Bristol Airport and well connected by regular bus services. Bath Spa train, coach and bus stations are both in the heart of the city centre, which is of a compact centre and best explored on foot if possible.

Travelling to Bath by Car

Bath is located just ten miles from junction 18 of the M4 motorway, which runs direct from London and Heathrow Airport.

There are also excellent motorway links from the north, Devon and Cornwall via the M5 motorway, whilst Wales is just a short drive west on the M4 motorway.

As Bath is a small city, the roads can become congested at busy times such as Saturdays, around the Christmas Market and when Bath Rugby plays home fixtures.

To avoid traffic queues we recommend using one of the city’s three Park & Ride services.

Please be aware when driving around the city that there are a number of one way streets and bus lanes in operation.

Travelling to Bath by Train

Bath train station is located in the city centre, just a short walk from the shops and attractions.

There are regular train services direct from London Paddington and London Waterloo to Bath Spa, with an average journey time of around 90 minutes.

Bristol Temple Meads is just 15 minutes away by train and is a major hub for travel to all other parts of the country.

A number of trains to Bath Spa will change at Bristol Temple Meads including services from northern England, Scotland, Devon and Cornwall.

Direct services run from a number of destinations in the UK including Cardiff.

Regular train services run from Cardiff Central to Bath train station, with an average journey time of around 65 minutes.

If you’re staying in Bath for a few days you can easily take a day trip by train to a number of nearby destinations including Bristol, Bradford-on-Avon, Frome and Salisbury.

Once you have arrived in Bath by train, there a number of easy ways to get around.

As the station is located in the city centre, many of the main attractions, shops and many accommodation providers are just a short walk away.

Alternatively, a taxi rank can be found immediately outside the main exit of the station, plus the Bath bus station is located just a minutes’ walk further along Dorchester Street.

Travelling to Bath by Air

Travelling from Bristol Airport to Bath:

Bristol Airport is just 20 miles from Bath making it the city’s closest airport. It currently serves over 113 destinations worldwide.

The A4 Bristol Airport to Bath Bus Service provides a direct link between Bath and Bristol Airport. The service stops at various points in Saltford, Keynsham and South Bristol, operating hourly with the total journey time taking just over an hour.

Alternatively, the Bristol Airport Flyer express coach service will take you from the airport to Bristol Temple Meads train station, where you can catch one of the many frequent train services into Bath.

The coach service runs on a regular basis, seven days a week with complete journey time approximately one hour. A full list of times can be viewed by checking the service’s timetable.

Travelling from Heathrow Airport to Bath:

Heathrow Airport is 100 miles east of Bath on the M4 motorway.

A regular National Express coach service runs direct from the airport to Bath with a total journey time of 120 to 180 minutes.

Alternatively, a Heathrow Express train service runs between the airport and London Paddington, where you can then pick up a direct train service to Bath Spa train station. The complete journey time for this is approximately 135 minutes.

Travelling from Gatwick Airport to Bath:

Gatwick Airport is located in south London, approximately 140 miles east of Bath.

You can take a train from the airport to Reading train station where you can pick up a train service to Bath Spa train station, with a total journey time of approximately 180 minutes.

Alternatively, catch a National Express coach from Gatwick Airport via Heathrow Airport to Bath with a journey time of approximately 270 minutes.
